I am a woman considering leaving the lab. One of my issues is I got poor mentoring in the beginning of my career. I did not realize it and now my P.I. thinks I have A.D.D. Not only did I get poor mentoring, but no protocols from the previous grad student were left behind, except the one that was published. Everyone comes to me to ask if there is a protocol, which has become a joke. I have no credibility and am dismissed as wrong even when I give the correct answer. I hate going to the lab and want out! I hate the attitude that I would be wasting my intelligence by not finishing. That's saying that everyone who never even thinks of pursuing a PhD is stupid.

Thanks for the recognition. Hope my post sheds some light on why people do what they do, and perhaps people won't feel so guilty for having their own reasons for picking their career.

I am sure there is still room in the blogosphere for a food and chemistry blog! The best one I have seen thus far is http://blog.khymos.org (the khymos.org site also has other good info such as book recommendations).

Harold McGee's book "On Food and Cooking" is a wonderful resource, and the author puts forth a monthly (approx.) column called "Curious Cook" in the NYT (column subjects are listed at his blog, http://news.curiouscook.com/).

Keep us posted if you decide to take this on as a new project!

I think its wonderful that Chefs have started exploring the possabilities of this "applied Molecular Gastronomy science" in their kitchens. I dont really care what its called but when you have a seriously strong culinary background and introduce just the right amount of some of these new techniques and methods to your cooking the results can be incredable. In the most delicious and exciting scense i mean. Homer Cantu, Moto, GrantAchatz, Alinea, Ferran Adria, El Bulli, etc.

By the same token the results can be disasterous if the culinary base isnt strong enough to begin with. that being said i have had enough bad meals in restaurants of conventional techniques as well. so Bring it on. i love a foam or hot gelee, here or their.

I will attend Madrid Fusion in a few weeks along with 600 other chefs and i can hardly wait to see whats next!!

i hope its "over and above" my expectations

Chef Stefan

Matt,
I did a quick google search and found this site:
http://www.perfumerflavorist.com/webdirectory
at the end of hte company info there is a section on associations with links to the web pages. the American Chemical Society has a Flavor Division and many other national and international societies are listed.
